    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Strawberry Line W.I
    We’re delighted to have revived the WI in Cranmore and surrounding villages. We wanted to get a group up and running for the ladies in our community and revive the Cranmore & Doulting WI that sadly closed in 2006 after 60 years in operation. We held our inaugural meeting and “champagne & cupcake launch” in January 2010.
    Our desire is to create a dynamic, lively and innovative club for local women to meet up and have fun, share common interests and learn new things. We believe it’s really important to revive traditional skills from our elders that may be lost, campaign on issues that matter to us and our community - as a WI group we can be really effective in highlighting an issue or addressing change because the WI has a lot of clout as a well known and respected organisation.
    We call ourselves Strawberry Line WI because historically this was the affectionate name given to the railway track that ran through Cranmore, transporting fresh strawberries from Somerset to Wiltshire. We love the name “Strawberry Line” as it means something to the local area. It’s fresh and feminine and of course reminiscent of strawberry jam!
    The WI is a national treasure and is experiencing a revival – the recent economic downturn has prompted renewed interest in a sense of community and in home-making skills such as sewing, knitting and baking. We combine these great traditional values of the “old skool” WI whilst embracing a new image for our WI - inviting speakers from Somerset Lavender, Brown Cow Organics, hosting cookery demonstrations, a jewellery making masterclass, a glamorous Cocktail Night (when we learnt to make fresh cuban Mojitos), and a “Cider & Survival” Night. We’ve arranged talks on subjects such as support work in a Romanian Orphanage, Wildlife Gardening, Two Fat Ladies & Chocolate and Wine-Tasting, 2011 meetings likely to include a Zumba fitness masterclass, Bee Keeping, Cornish Pasty-making and even Rock Climbing! We also host social evenings: in Spring we held a skittles night in the local pub and this Summer we hosted a garden party on a member’s local dairy farm, as well as a “Craftacular Spectacular” where we invited members to bring along a home-made strawberry recipe to be entered into a competition for a fabulous silver trophy!
    We have about 40 members – of all ages – students, professional women, mums and retired ladies – everyone is welcome. Please contact Cobi Snelson, secretary (01749 880934) for more information.
    Expand your horizons – belong to something special, be part of a team, take up new interests, make friends and have fun!
    £30.00 for a year’s membership. If you choose not to subscribe, we will ask for £3.00 per meeting (maximum of 3 visits a year).
