17/03/08 The applicants have appealed against MDC's refusal of the plan. The groups campaigning against the noise nuisance that would be caused by the proposed range are considering what action to take.

15/08/07 - The planning application has been refused by Mendip District Council. 11 votes against, 2 for. The shooters may appeal against the refusal so keep watching for further news.

The Council chamber was packed out with shooting supporters and protesters and the meeting was tense and dramatic as the two sides put their cases. Local residents were very well supported by Cranmore and Wanstrow Parish Councils in their objections to the continual noise that would have come from this site - they had proposed shooting for 6 hours every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and for 4 hours on alternate Sundays with very loud shotguns and full bore rifles.
The Planning Board debated the case and voted by a huge majority ( 11 against, 2 for ) to support local residents in their request to keep the area peaceful rather than turn it into a large firing range.

Thankyou very much to everyone who wrote in objecting, signed our petition against the noise and spent hours working to see that we were properly represented in this case. Every email, letter and signature from local people really counted and even the last minute emails were summarized and brought to the meeting by the Mendip case officer.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Meetings have been held at Wanstrow ( 01/08/07) and Cranmore (07/08/07) to discuss the potential problems from this issue. Residents in both villages said they had not been properly consulted about the issue and those likely to be affected by the noise nuisance were horrified by the proposal.
