Torr Reservoir East Cranmore

Lesser Scaup duck

When Torr Reservoir was built, it was hoped that it would be a haven for aquatic birds and now several years later it is proving to be exactly that.

Bruce Taylor is our local expert and he visits several times a week to record what is happening. Here are two photos of rare birds that have been visiting this winter and Bruce's comments

" Of particular note was Somerset's second ever Lesser Scaup. This rare North American duck spent the winter commuting between Torr and Stourhead.
Rarer still was the Franklin's Gull that I found in January. There are generally only 2 or 3 records of this North American gull in Britain every year. There have only been 2 previous records in the county."
